The Business of Events

There are approximately 150 annual events in the Parksville-Qualicum Region. These events are well attended affairs and are enjoyed by residents and visitors. As a region, we host special days like Hi Neighbour Day in Errington and a multitude of Family Days in Qualicum Beach, Coombs and Lighthouse Country. There are markets and car shows. There are Garden Tours and Art Shows; food events and events that showcase the natural beauty of the region. And the Festivals - Kidfest, Beachfest, Kitefest and the Festival of Lights to name a few. Canada Day has become a major event celebrating our heritage and the nation’s birthday.

All of the events over the years have done a magnificent job of promoting our region and providing amazing experiences for visitors and residents.

The Quality Foods Canadian Open Sandsculpting Competition and Exhibition attracts in excess of a hundred thousand people annually over a 6-week period. Canada Day and the Thrifty Foods Firework Spectacular draws in the neighbourhood of 25,000 people for a single day event.

Both the people coming from out of town and residents taking in the festivities that the 150 + events draw contribute hugely to our local economy. Business in Parksville-Qualicum Beach thrives due in large part to the experiences offered by these volunteers run and organized events.

While most if not all of the events are run by volunteers there is a cost to put together these amazing experiences. The cost of the events is born by businesses through sponsorship opportunities. The business community in our region are an amazing group as they provide the hundreds of thousands of dollars collectively to ensure the success of all of the events and festivals in our region. Business benefits from the influx of visitors who come to see and hear the special events and from the exposure given to the audiences and participants through their sponsorship.

The message I want to deliver is twofold; to the business community there is a huge benefit to stepping up to the plate and dedicating a portion of your advertising budget to sponsor these events, ensuring their continued viability, to residents; make a commitment to shop local and support the business community that supports the community as a whole.
